Kagyu Monlam Chenmo is a major annual Buddhist prayer festival organized by the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The term “Monlam Chenmo” means “The Great Prayer Festival.”
Held in Bodh Gaya, India — the sacred place of Lord Buddha’s enlightenment — the Kagyu Monlam Chenmo gathers thousands of monks, nuns, and lay practitioners from around the world to pray for world peace, harmony, and the welfare of all sentient beings. The event includes large-scale recitations of sutras, special rituals, offerings, teachings, and activities promoting compassion and wisdom.
It was initiated by His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, who revitalized the tradition to bring the Kagyu community together in Bodhgaya each winter. The Kagyu Monlam Chenmo is known for its profound atmosphere of devotion, beautiful ceremonies, and the iconic golden Buddha statue under the Bodhi Tree.
